Digimarc Corporation, a provider of digital watermarking technologies, has announced the availability of Digimarc Recycle after its successful trial and test in multiple countries.
Digimarc Recycle utilises covert digital watermarks on plastic packaging, linking them to detailed product information such as packaging composition, brand, food or non-food grade plastic, and others.
Replacing optical sortation with digital watermarking helps to create the variety, volume, and quality of recycled plastics required for the growth of the circular economy, according to the company.
The technology enables more accurate sorting of plastics, which in turn allows producers to purchase and repurpose higher-quality recycled plastics that are similar to virgin plastics.
Digimarc claims that its digital watermarking technology can identify plastic packaging to any desired level of granularity, which is not possible with existing optical sorting technology or other proposed next-generation technologies.
Moreover, Digimarc Recycle aims to discourage the use of new plastics by making extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes more feasible.

“With today’s announcement, the technology proven to effect change is both accessible and affordable to a wide variety of partners across the recycling ecosystem without further delay.”
Last October, the leadership team of the digital watermarks initiative HolyGrail selected France to be the first country to implement Digimarc Recycle nationwide.
