Swedish packaging firm Tetra Pak has launched a new bio-based cap for gable top carton packages.
The new cap is made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) derived from sugar cane.

By GlobalDataThe company says that the launch of the bio-based version of TwistCap OSO 34 is a key step towards the development of fully renewable packages. Around 80% of the material in its one-litre Tetra Rex brand carton is wood-made paperboard. The new bio-based cap increases the content of renewable material in the package by 4%.
The year 2013 saw the sale of about 1.1 billion bio-caps globally, representing a rise of over 80% compared to 2012.
Tetra Pak product director Christina Chester said that Finland-based dairy products manufacturer Valio is the first firm that used the new version of the bio-based cap for its products.
"We are glad that customers see value in our efforts to help them boost their environmental profile," Chester added.
The company says that customers can shift from the standard TwistCap OSO 34 to the bio-based version without any additional investment or modification to their existing filling machines.
