Family-owned coffee company Gaviña has successfully recycled more than three million coffee capsules and bags through its partnership with international recycling specialist TerraCycle.
The company’s announcement was in line with its celebration of Earth Month.
The Coffee Bag and Pod Free Recycling Program invites individuals and organisations to recycle their empty coffee bags and used coffee pods and capsules from Gaviña’s brands, including Café La Llave, Don Francisco’s Coffee, and José’s Gourmet Coffee.
The process involves cleaning, separating, melting, and remoulding the materials to create new recycled products while the coffee residue is sent to industrial composting.
Participants in the programme can earn TerraCycle Recycling Rewards points for every shipment they send to TerraCycle.
These points can be converted into cash donations for a nonprofit, school, or charitable organisation of the participant’s choice.

Over the four-year partnership, the companies have recycled enough coffee bags, pods, and capsules would stand 1,500 times taller than the Statue of Liberty when stacked.
Gaviña Coffee Company fourth-generation roaster Lisette Gaviña Lopez said: “Today’s coffee consumers demand quality and diverse brewing methods while actively seeking ways to minimise their waste footprint.
“That’s why we’re thrilled to deliver the quality and variety they crave, along with a free and easy way for them to do their part for the environment. We take immense pride in the continued success of our recycling programme and hope it motivates even more individuals to take steps towards a greener future.”
