B!POD, a business unit of SAES Getters, has selected SABIC’s ocean-bound plastic (OBP)-based polypropylene resin for their container manufacturing.
The chosen material, SABIC PP 576P, is a high-gloss resin from the company’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio, containing approximately 50% OBP feedstock.
The OBP feedstock for the resin is sourced from used plastic collected within 50km of shorelines, which is then converted into plastic feedstock through advanced recycling processes.
Costruzioni Elettromeccaniche Legnaghesi, an Italian company in thermoplastic resin processing, receives the PP resin in its natural colour.
The company adds special masterbatches to create B!POD containers in various sizes and custom colours, which are fully recyclable within existing PP material streams.
SABIC circular economy business global director Khaled Al-Jalawi said: “We are very pleased about working with SAES Getters to help consumers meet the challenge of improving food preservation with a powerful vacuum system that uses containers moulded in OBP-based SABIC PP.

By GlobalData“The decision to replace standard virgin PP by our OBP material in the containers also marks a significant step towards greater sustainability, as it supports the transformation of the plastics economy towards circularity.”
The SABIC PP 576P resin is not only a food contact approved grade but also free from PFAS (per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances) and BPA (bisphenol A), offering ease of processing and producing dimensionally stable parts with low warpage and high gloss.
Certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification PLUS chain of custody, this solution represents a significant advancement in sustainable packaging.
The rollout of these sustainable containers across the European Union, Switzerland, and the UK is expected by mid-2024, with an expansion to Asia slated for 2025.
SAES Getters chief innovation officer and B!POD co-founder Ginevra della Porta said: “This innovation embraces sustainability from the very concept to end use – with an advanced vacuum technology to minimise food waste, with SABIC’s OBP-based material that prevents used plastic from polluting our oceans, and with containers in a range of colours each dedicated to an endangered species, such as orangutan orange or whale grey, it is designed to raise the awareness of consumers.”
