Mondi, a global packaging and paper company, has finalised a €95m ($103.69m) investment at its Świecie containerboard mill in Poland.

This strategic investment is set to increase the mill’s kraftliner capacity by an additional 55,000 tonnes (t) annually.

The upgrade includes the rebuild of the paper machines PM2 and PM5 and the addition of a new anaerobic treatment plant with an integrated cooling system.

The company will also improve the pulp mill, the recycled fibre line, and the energy recovery system at the site.

These enhancements are expected to meet the rising demand for heavy-duty packaging in the region and improve the mill’s environmental footprint.

The mill’s advancements are also designed to address the increasing customer need for improved product quality.

In addition, the upgradation will contribute to environmental conservation by reducing water use, wastewater emissions, and bolstering energy efficiency.

The investment highlights Mondi’s dedication to efficient operations and its progress towards the goals outlined in its Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework.

It also demonstrates the group’s commitment to the region by offering competitive, high-quality employment and the potential to contribute further to the area’s economic prosperity, according to the company.

As per the company’s report on its MAP2030 performance in 2023, Mondi reported that it was on track to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with science-based net-zero targets.

Since the investment’s completion in June this year, Mondi Świecie has expanded its ProVantage SmartKraft Brown portfolio, offering a wider range of grammage options.

This product aligns with the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Mondi Świecie managing director Tomasz Katewicz said: “The completion of this project marks a milestone for Mondi Świecie, enabling us to advance our operations and deliver even higher-quality paper to our customers. I am proud of our team’s exceptional skills and commitment, which were crucial in achieving these goals.”

Last week, Mondi announced an agreement to acquire the Western Europe packaging assets of Schumacher Packaging for an enterprise value of €634m.
