Ulma Packaging has developed a new VFFS Air Extraction System (Tight Bag) to address the issue of excess air in food packaging.

The new bags are expected to enable manufacturers to decrease the size of the boxes and add additional packs in each pallet.

It will also eliminate the need to make holes or micro-perforations as it is done in conventional packaging to reduce space, which also decreases the shelf life of the food products.

Ulma VFFS business manager Steve Brooks said: “Our patented air extraction system is perfect for the food sector. The bag is automatically sealed and is not pierced, which means you get full seal integrity while maintaining a tight bag.

“The amount of air that remains in the bag can be controlled directly from the HMI panel and can be adjusted during production to suit a variety of products.”

“During trials, we achieved at least 10%-20% more packs per pallet meaning logistics costs can be reduced while, at the same time, speeding up delivery of products to customers.”

The company stated that the new Tight Bag packaging system will prevent the heavier ingredient to fall in the bottom, as it happens in bag-in-box packaging during transport.

Tight Bag removes all air within the pack through a patented jaw design and creating a controlled vacuum before sealing without causing any damage to the product.

It is incorporated in the horizontal cross seal area that enables the machine to pack up to 90 products a minute.

The system will enable the company to reduce its logistical costs as it increases the number of packs that can be stored on pallets saving fuel miles, as well as reduce the chances of external contamination due to perforations.
