Valmet has received an order to supply an extensive paper machine grade conversion rebuild for graphic and speciality paper producer Burgo Group at its Verzuolo Mill in Italy.
The contract, which is valued at around €40-60m, also requires Valmet to provide a wide scope of automation.
Valmet will rebuild paper machine PM 9 and related stock preparation systems currently producing lightweight-coated (LWC) paper grades at the mill.
The rebuild is aimed at facilitating the production of recycled containerboard grades, and is consistent with Burgo Group’s plan to focus on containerboard grades.
Furthermore, it will enable the company to continue its diversification strategy, which includes publishing, packaging, printing paper, and paper for corrugators.
Valmet Paper Business Line president Jari Vähäpesola said: “By having all the process equipment, process automation and mill engineering from one supplier, binds it all into a one.

By GlobalData“Valmet’s long expertise on grade conversions is essential for this project. It is also a great asset for Burgo, that this paper machine was originally supplied by Valmet in 2001, so we know it well.”
The rebuilt machine is expected to become operational by the end of next year.
Under the terms of the contract, Valmet will deliver a completely new Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) line and perform major modifications in the existing paper machine.
As well as two bale handling and vertical pulper systems, the OCC line comprises cleaning and screening systems with fractionation and disc filters for short and long fibre lines.
The company will also supply a new handling system for OCC rejects and modify the existing broke system and approach flow system.
Valmet’s scope of delivery in the existing paper machine includes a headbox rebuild, modifications to forming section, press section and pre-dryer section, and a new after dryer section with a high humidity hood.
In addition, the company will deliver a continuous cooking system for surface size starch, and relocation of the existing reel.
PM 9 will produce recycled liner and fluting grades at a trim width of 9,800mm, with an annual capacity of 600,000t.
