Finland-based food packaging specialist Huhtamaki has launched a new initiative to improve paper cup recycling throughout the UK.

The company has created a new design for its range of Specialty Cups – single wall hot cups and paper vending cups – that will carry a message that reads ‘please recycle this cup’ to encourage consumers to recycle them.

In addition, the design will feature a QR code that can be scanned using a mobile phone.

After scanning the code, the customer will be directed to a web page that contains information regarding cup recycling sites and schemes across the UK.

“All of the cups manufactured by Huhtamaki in the UK are either recyclable or certified as compostable in approved composting facilities.”

Huhtamaki UK marketing manager Becci Eplett said: “We wanted to refresh our single wall and paper vending cup offering and introduce a more modern colour palette for consumers.

“The cup aesthetic is a really important contributor to the overall drinking experience but we also wanted to do more to help to communicate the recycling message.

The objective of the initiative is to encourage consumers to head to their nearest cup recycling point to recycle their used paper cup.

According to Huhtamaki, the website will be constantly updated whenever a new recycling scheme is introduced.

The website will also serve as a medium to connect consumers and businesses.

The company has included iconography in the new designs on the Specialty Range to drive home the point that all the wood fibres used in its UK-made cups are obtained from sustainability managed, PEFC certified forest.
