British photonic printing solutions provider DataLase has introduced the WBF 6101 water-based flexo coating for corrugated packaging in a move to assist brands with sustainable packaging goals.
WBF 6101 is designed to extend DataLase Case Coding solution capability and allow laser coding and marking of both white and natural kraft corrugate boxes.
The new solution is claimed to be a suitable alternative for high-resolution inkjet, waxjet and print and apply labels while eliminating waste and single-use plastics from the supply chain.
It also supports companies to apply variable information such as shipping information, GS1 Barcodes, batch/date codes and check-weigh information on to corrugated boxes.
DataLase chief sales and marketing officer Mark Naples said: “We estimate that for every one million typical shipping labels used (100mm x 150mm or 4in x 6in), nearly 300km of unnecessary backing waste is produced.
“If we apply this to a typical production environment, it equates to thousands of kilometres of backing and thermal ribbon waste being sent straight to an incinerator every year.

By GlobalData“The DataLase Case Coding solution creates significant operational savings for manufacturers, as well as contributing to brands packaging sustainability agendas.”
The company noted that its Case Coding removes single-use plastics from the production environment, inks and solvents (VOCs) from the fulfilment area, offers robust coding to avoid unnecessary waste, high coding throughput and operational reliability.
The new coating solution will also reduce the need for product recalls and penalties from retailers for rework by creating high-contrast and durable codes.
