Health Canada has launched public consultations into proposed regulations for the labelling and packaging requirements of vaping products.
Vaping Products Labelling and Packaging Regulations, the government agency’s proposed set of reforms, would enforce companies to display a full list of ingredients on their vaping substances’ labels.
For vaping products featuring nicotine, Health Canada wants companies to display a standardised nicotine concentration statement along with a health warning about the substance’s addictive nature.
Child-resistant containers and a toxicity warning would also become necessary if the regulations came into place.
The government’s efforts are expected to protect Canadians’ health and safety by increasing awareness of the side effects of nicotine use, in addition to ensuring the information displayed on product labels is consistent and, therefore, easier to understand for consumers.
The regulations would also assist with vaping products being stored safely, prevent children from ingesting vaping liquid by mistake, and provide instructions on how to proceed in the event of a poisoning.

By GlobalDataIf ingested, nicotine is acutely toxic and when vaped, it can affect the brain development of teenagers and lead to addiction.
Canada Minister of Health Ginette Petitpas Taylor, said: “The Government of Canada is deeply concerned about the trend of youth vaping, which threatens Canada’s hard-earned gains in tobacco control.
“Today, I’m happy to announce that we’re moving forward with planned action, based on science, to further mandate the way vaping products are labelled and packaged. As part of Canada’s Tobacco Strategy, we are looking at innovative ways to help reduce nicotine addiction and the harms associated with it.
“These proposed Regulations will protect Canadians, especially young children, from nicotine poisoning, and help adults who choose to vape make informed choices about their health.”
Health Canada will run the consultation until 5 September 2019, with the country’s citizens welcome to provide feedback.
