The European Commission (EC) has announced that over 100 public and private partners across the plastics value chain have signed the Circular Plastics Alliance declaration.
The partners include small and medium businesses, large corporations, business associations, standards bodies, research organisations and local, as well as national authorities.
Launched in December 2018, the Circular Plastics Alliance encourages voluntary actions for the recycled plastics market in the EU.
As part of the declaration, the EC will formulate strategies on how the participants can reach the goal of using ten million tonnes of recycled plastic annually to create new products in the EU by 2025.
It will also urge the participants to shift to zero plastic waste in nature and zero landfiling.
EC sustainable development first vice-president Frans Timmermans said: “I welcome the industry’s commitments to rethink the way we produce and use plastics.

By GlobalData“By efficiently recycling plastics, we will clean up the planet and fight climate change, by substituting fossil fuels with plastic waste in the production cycle.”
As part of the declaration, the EC will focus on producing more recyclable plastic products by enhancing the design.
It will also integrate more recycled plastics and explore the potential for plastic waste collection, sorting and recycling, as well as investment areas across Europe.
The commission will also establish a research and development agenda for circular plastics, as well as a transparent and reliable monitoring system for tracking plastic waste flow in the EU.
EC internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska said: “We have the opportunity to make our industry a world leader in recycled plastics.
“We should fully seize it to protect the environment, to create new jobs in this sector and remain competitive.”
The EC is planning to keep the declaration of the Alliance open on its website for more partners to join.
The commission is also inviting more business associations and companies to submit voluntary pledges to use or produce more recycled plastics.
