Enzymes producer for molecular biology applications New England Biolabs (NEB) has decided to move to a 100% recyclable alternative for shipping its products.
Developed by cold chain shipping technology provider TemperPack, the new packaging can be recycled with other corrugated cardboard after unpacking.

NEB’s new shipping box will feature ClimaCell insert, a paper-based technology that can maintain the required temperature conditions for the duration of a product’s delivery time.
The alternative packaging is environmentally friendly and helps avoid expanded polystyrene (EPS) from entering landfills and lower carbon emissions.
NEB CEO Jim Ellard said: “NEB has always placed environmental stewardship as one of our highest priorities.
“We are continuously working to promote ecologically sound practices and environmental sustainability, to protect our natural resources both locally and globally. It is our goal to continuously improve our business processes to minimize our impact on the environment.

The new packaging is expected to replace EPS shipments in the US from later this month or early May.
EPS is light, durable, and known for its insulative properties but is difficult to recycle, noted the company.
TemperPack founder James McGoff said: “We are excited to partner with NEB in its efforts to implement a more sustainable solution for its shipping process.
“Not only are they helping to eliminate EPS from landfills, but the transition to the ClimaCell shipper represents a 25% reduction in carbon emissions.”
