US-based speciality chemicals provider Solenis has partnered with sustainable packaging technology company Pulpex and consortium partners to support Pulpex’s paper bottle design.
Pulpex is developing a commonly recyclable, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) free paper bottle using sustainably sourced pulp.
Solenis will provide chemical solutions, including surface treatments, to improve the bottle’s functional and appearance properties.
Solenis Consumer Packaging global packaging director Richard Brooks said: “This collaboration with Pulpex is another indicator of our commitment to new, sustainable and innovative technologies to the food and beverage paper packaging market.
“The partnership will enable Solenis to serve the growing eco-friendly paper bottle market while maintaining our commitment to environmental sustainability.”
The Pulpex technology is designed to cater to any brand’s requirements and uses food-safe coloured pigments and dyes to emboss, deboss, label and direct print.

Pulpex was founded by venture management firm Pilot Lite and beverage alcohol company Diageo.
The consortium aims to create branded paper bottles for various applications, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, liquid foods and lubricants.
Pulpex CEO Scott Winston said: “Solenis is well-known as a leader of process and functional chemistries, with more than a century of service to the pulp and paper industry.
“The company’s technical know-how and its wide spectrum of solutions will help us deliver eco-friendly paper bottles that meet the brand and functional needs of our consortium partners.”
In June, Pulpex and its global partners collaborated with German chemical company BASF to develop food-grade barrier technologies for the paper bottle.
The company is currently looking to alter the bottle’s design to allow it to hold hot-fill and carbonated beverages, aiming to achieve this by the end of next year.
