Oxford City Council and its social enterprise group, ODS, have collaborated with coffee pod recycling service Podback to allow Oxford residents to recycle their coffee pods at the kerbside.
Created in partnership with Nespresso, Nescafe Dolce Gusto and Tassimo, Podback is the UK’s first coffee pod recycling service.
From 9 August, Podback will provide free collection bags for residents to recycle both plastic and aluminium coffee pods.
A Collect+ service has also been provided to help residents who do not have access to a kerbside service, allowing them to drop off filled bags at a Collect+ store instead.
Residents will receive an information leaflet giving them details on how to register for the service, based on the type of coffee pods they use.
Oxford City Council cabinet member for Parks and Waste Reduction Lubna Arshad said: “With more people working from home and drinking coffee, the expansion of the recycling service to collect coffee pods couldn’t come at a better time.

By GlobalData“Our residents want to do the right thing for the environment and recycle as much as possible.
“The coffee pods will be collected every week for recycling using both our household recycling and waste vehicles.”
The service will support Oxfordshire’s Environmental Partnership, which aims to cut residual waste and increase the recycling rate in the county by 65%.
Podback executive director Rick Hindley said: “Consumers can already access local Collect+ stores, of which there are more than 6,500 in the UK, to drop off empty coffee pods.
“But this new collaboration with ODS and Oxford City Council, to introduce coffee pod collections through the existing kerbside recycling services, will make it even easier for consumers to participate at home whilst helping the Council increase the amount it recycles.”
Last month, plastic recycling organisation RECOUP secured funding from Innovate UK for a research project on recycling campaign communications.
