Multinational packaging company Amcor has introduced proprietary lidding technology for use in combination healthcare products.
The packaging solution is based on a patented inert film development and laminate design.
It features a lidding solution capable of enduring heat sterilisation without hindering drug uptake into the packaging.
The technology can be used for devices that use an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to form the basis of a medicine.
It aims to offer machinability, integrity post-sterilisation and easy opening for patients.
Amcor chief commercial officer Peter Konieczny said: “We are bringing together industry-leading innovation and close customer relationships to develop the packaging solutions of the future.

By GlobalData“With this next-generation healthcare lidding technology, we are opening a world of possibilities for products using [APIs].
“We look forward to extending this differentiated lidding technology to additional combination products in the future.”
The solution will complement Amcor’s existing healthcare products, including lidding for complex sterilisation environments and high barrier overwraps for eye droppers and medication.
Amcor developed a version of the technology for use with contact lenses in collaboration with Johnson and Johnson (J&J) Vision over a period of several years.
J&J Vision brought its knowledge of ophthalmic device packaging requirements, while Amcor contributed its experience in film extrusion, lamination and conversion for healthcare.
Amcor specialises in manufacturing sustainable packaging for various industries, including the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, home and personal care sectors.
In April, the company began trialling the AmSky blister system, a recyclable polyethylene (PE) based thermoform blister packaging solution for healthcare packaging.
The packaging is designed to cut carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to other packaging solutions on the market.
Amcor claims it is the first child-resistant and senior-friendly (CRSF) recyclable solution for the most in-demand types of pharmaceutical packaging.
