By GlobalDataThe facility will leverage the company’s patented recycling technology to convert end-of-life plastic waste into a recycled material called TACOIL.
TotalEnergies will convert TACOIL into virgin-quality polymers for use as flexible and rigid food-grade packaging containers.
Expected to be operational in early 2025, the new plant will process and convert 33,000tpa of post-consumer end-of-life plastic waste.
Plastic Energy founder and CEO Carlos Monreal said: “I am pleased to announce another new Plastic Energy plant in Spain, and a new collaboration agreement with our partner, TotalEnergies.
“This new large-scale recycling plant will be an impactful addition to our existing portfolio of operational plants in Spain and will allow for an increase in the amount of end-of-life plastics that we can recycle in Europe.”
Plastic Energy and TotalEnergies started their collaboration in September 2020, when the partners formed a joint venture to develop a plastic waste conversion facility at the TotalEnergies Grandpuits zero-crude platform in France.
This project is slated to be operational in 2023 and will have a capacity of 15,000tpa.
In addition, the two parties partnered with Freepoint Eco-Systems in October 2021 to build a recycling plant in Texas, US.
TotalEnergies polymers senior vice-president Valérie Goff said: “This new project with Plastic Energy in Spain follows two collaboration projects already announced in France and the US. Those projects contribute to addressing the challenge of the circular economy and to our ambition of producing 30% recycled and renewable polymers by 2030.”
