By GlobalDataThe partnership is in line with Grupo Modelo’s sustainability goals and will help the company to remove plastic rings from all cans sold in Quintana Roo.
The company will eliminate plastic rings in two phases, starting with those on six-packs of 355ml Corona Extra, Montejo and Modelo Especial.
Following this, the partnership will install the high-speed CanCollar Fortuna machine, which uses just a paperboard clip to hold the upper part of the cans together.
WestRock’s CanCollar Eco packaging will be then be adopted across Mexico on 355ml can six-packs of beers including Corona Extra, Montejo, Modelo Especial, Barrilito, Negra Modelo and Victoria.
In addition, the sustainable packaging will be used on 473ml can four-packs of Victoria, Modelo Especial and Corona.
Through this initiative, Grupo Modelo will be able to remove 100t of plastic waste and avoid 335t of packaging waste annually.
Grupo Modelo sustainability regional director Soqui Calderon said: “At Grupo Modelo, we are continuing to evaluate various alternatives for plastic rings in the packaging of beer cans.
“This is how we discovered CanCollar Eco, a new solution developed by WestRock and produced in Mexico by Grupo Gondi. Made from recyclable paperboard, this innovative packaging uses the least amount of material required to hold and to keep our beer cans secure through the supply chain.”
Last year, WestRock partnered with US-based liquid packaging and dispensing solution provider Liquibox to develop a bag-in-box solution for Amazon.
