Austria-based sustainable packaging provider Coveris has partnered with pet food producer Irish Dog Food to develop recyclable bags for its products.

Irish Dog Food is replacing its current bags, which contain non-recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PE), with bags made from fully recyclable mono-material PE.

By adopting the new packaging, Irish Dog Food aims to offer recyclable and premium packaging in bigger sizes.

The bag features a matte finish designed to enhance communication and shelf appeal. The sustainable bags are available in 10kg and 12kg sizes.

Irish Dog Food has been selling its pet food in the PE bags at Aldi stores across the UK since last year.

Coveris pet food key account manager Philippe Poudens said: “We were able to provide bigger bags with the same benefits as our standard structures with a matte finish, while reducing the carbon footprint and preserving the environment, which was one of the key challenges for our customer.”

The mono-material solution fulfils one of the four goals of the UK Plastics Pact, to which Coveris and Irish Dog Food are both signatories.

The UK Plastics Pact aims to make all plastic packaging in the UK reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

Irish Dog Food purchase manager Jamie Queally said: “We wanted to be one of the first to offer recyclable bags on the market, but we didn’t want it to impact our production process and machinery.

“Coveris was able to provide us with a new, recyclable material, however, with the same characteristics as our previous bags with the PET/PE structure.”

Last month, Coveris introduced a range of lightweight stretch films containing 30% recycled content.

The films are being sold in both hand and pre-stretch formats and are, according to the company, the thinnest recycled stretch films available.
