US-based grocery store chain New Seasons Market has begun using sustainable food packaging developed by Graphic Packaging International.
The retailer will replace the plastic clamshells currently used for its own Partner Brand Fresh Pasta with the sustainable PaperSeal tray.
Graphic Packaging developed the packaging in partnership with tray sealing technology company G Mondini.
New Seasons Market will roll out the PaperSeal tray-packed pasta in stores from next month.
This is expected to help the company divert 120,000 plastic packs from waste streams a year.
New Seasons Market senior sustainability manager Athena Petty said: “We’re constantly assessing the trade-offs between product preservation, upstream material impact and downstream disposal opportunities in our packaging work, and our customers expect our leadership in this area.

By GlobalData“The decision to adopt PaperSeal packaging reflects the process we take when making decisions, and this change is a positive step to balance our impacts on people, the planet and our business.”
PaperSeal trays are available in multiple formats, including modified atmosphere (MAP), vacuum skin (VSP) and non-MAP top-seal trays.
They are suitable for packing fresh and processed meat, chilled and frozen ready meals, cheese, snacks, salad, fruit and other applications.
By switching to PaperSeal trays, New Seasons Market will reduce the amount of plastic used in each pack by 91%.
The packaging is recyclable as part of kerbside collection programmes once the liner has been removed.
Graphic Packaging global innovation and new business development senior vice-president Ricardo De Genova said: “The PaperSeal tray is a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic food packaging trays.
“Since its launch, it has been widely adopted across Europe, Japan and Australia, winning numerous sustainability awards, and has become a go-to choice for businesses looking to reduce plastic use in their packaging while maintaining freshness.”
Earlier this month, Graphic Packaging launched EnviroClip, a paperboard alternative to plastic rings and shrink film for beverage cans.
