US-based chemical company Dow has announced that its Packaging and Specialty Plastics (P&SP) business unit has had one of its recyclable packaging solutions certified in China as reducing carbon emissions by 35%.
Global testing service provider TÜV Rheinland certified that the all-polyethylene (PE) recyclable packaging developed using Dow’s INNATE TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation (TF-BOPE) emits 0.0194kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) during its lifecycle.
This is compared with traditional packaging made using PE and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) composite materials, which emit 0.0297kg of CO₂e.
As part of the verification and validation process, TÜV Rheinland also visited packaging manufacturer Fujian Kaida and integrated waste management firm Luhai, both of which are based in China.
The testing company also reviewed product documents and interviewed technical, operational and environment, health and safety (EH&S) experts from Luhai and Kaida to calculate the carbon emissions of the recyclable packaging.
Dow P&SP Asia-Pacific commercial vice-president Bambang Candra said: “This certification is testament to the value of Dow’s recyclable packaging solutions in supporting customers to achieve their carbon reduction goals.

By GlobalData“Adopting recyclable packaging is a step in the right direction to advance a sustainable future, and we strive to continue working closely with our partners to promote the circular economy for plastics.”
Chinese washing product brand Liby has adopted Dow’s recyclable packaging solution for its laundry pods.
The company estimates that it can save nearly four million kilos of CO₂e each year by replacing all its unrecyclable flexible packaging with the recyclable packaging solution by 2025.
In October last year, P&SP launched recyclable toothpaste tubes for sale in retail stores worldwide.
The tube is made using high-performance PE-based technology instead of the typically used combination of various plastics and a layer of aluminium, which is harder to recycle.
