Schur Pack Germany, subsidiary of Danish cardboard packaging company Schur Pack, completed the construction of a high-tech folding carton facility in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany, in September 2016.
The facility increased the company’s production capacity and adopted new quality standards to achieve superior quality, high-hygiene standards and shortest delivery times. It is also Europe’s most high-tech folding box facility and set new standards for future production by Schur Pack Germany.

The company spent a major share of the investment for new production equipment to achieve high-quality production and reduced delivery times. It recently relocated its office from Büchen, Schleswig-Holstein, to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the same location in which the new facility was built.

Financing Schur Pack’s folding carton facility in northern Germany
The plant is located at FMO AirportPark in Greven, Germany.
The total estimated investment for the project is €70m ($78m). The Ministry of Economy of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provided €17m ($18m) from the Improvement of Regional Economic Structure programme, while the rest was funded by Schur Pack.
Location of Schur Pack Germany’s new carton plant
The plant was constructed at the future Business Park A24 in Valluhn-Gallin, located near the A24-German highway between Berlin and Hamburg.
Schur chose the site because of its convenient location on the A24 and the availability of attractive commercial space, modern infrastructure and enterprise-oriented management at the industrial park.
Folding carton plant and infrastructure details
Schur Pack spent a majority of the investment on new production equipment to serve increasing customer demand for quality and reduce delivery time.
The plant is equipped with a high-degree of automation and features a fully automated high-bay warehouse. It also houses state-of-the-art printing and processing machines, which enable the company to manufacture a variety of packaging products. The equipment also includes sheet-fed offset printing machines, stamping machines and folder gluer machines.
It also features innovative finishing technology such as hot and cold foil.
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) ensure efficient flow and production processes at the plant. Schur Germany worked with its Swedish subsidiary Schur Packaging Systems to solve complex intra-logistics challenges in the new plant.
Printing presses in the new plant have the capability to produce up to 20,000 sheets an hour.
Sustainability of Schur Pack Germany’s new packaging plant
The new folding carton plant is powered by renewable energy sources. The entire building eliminates the use of fossils fuels, setting new standards for energy-efficiency.
Construction of the new folding carton plant
The folding carton facility was constructed on a 5ha (12.35 acre) plot. It has a floor area of approximately 28,000m² with a 30m high-rise warehouse and storage facilities for 23,000 pallets.
Construction began in August 2014 and the earthworks were completed by the middle of that month. Foundation and drainage works were completed before the end of the same year.
Construction of the fully automated high bay warehouse began in 2015 and the steel structure was mounted on the shelves in February. The first machines for the plant were delivered in the third quarter of 2015 and entire construction was completed in 2016.

The general planning and construction contract of the new plant was awarded in 2014 to IGB, a construction company based in Weimar, Germany.
