The US branch of houseware manufacturer Tramontina has revealed plans to start using bags with at least 90% recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) content instead of non-recycled single-use poly bags.
The commitment to replacing single-use poly bags is part of the company’s ongoing partnership with environmental consulting firm Searious Business.
Production of the new poly bags is due to begin in February next year and will enable Tramontina USA to remove nearly ten million poly bag units a year.
In addition, the transition from all non-recycled bags to recycled materials will help the company reduce the carbon emissions of its packaging by nearly 60%.
Tramontina USA product development and marketing vice-president Mars Mashburn said: “Adding to our long history of eco-friendly practices, we have been actively reviewing all elements of our packaging to decrease (our) use of plastics where we can and increase our commitment to sustainability across all avenues of our business.
“We are excited for this impactful first initiative resulting from our work with Searious Business and look forward to continuing to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint together in the future.”

By GlobalDataThe initiative is part of a packaging component improvement strategy carried out by Tramontina and Searious Business.
It is also part of Tramontina USA’s wider commitment to using more sustainable materials across all its packaging by 2025.
The scheme comes shortly after Tramontina USA partnered with Voice of the Oceans to address plastic pollution in the oceans.
Searious Business founder and CEO Willemijn Peeters said: “It is our mission to help conscious companies like Tramontina maximize their sustainability efforts and stimulate wide-scale organisational change.
“It has been incredible to work with a company that has been implementing sustainable practices for years, and this important step is just the beginning of accelerating Tramontina’s efforts.”
