Plastic packaging manufacturer União Plásticos has partnered with the Cooperative of Family Farmers of the Poço Fundo Region (COOPFAM) to provide renewable ‘I'm GreenT’ plastic in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The 100% renewable polyethylene is procured from sugarcane and will be used to produce organic coffee packaging.

COOPFAM industry official Edivânia de Fátima Fernandes said: “This will be the first organic coffee packaging to invest in the use of green polyethylene in the Brazilian market, which shows our commitment to sustainability.

“It is another great achievement not only for the cooperative, but also for the final consumer. Our expectation is to take this product to all our packaging.”

Every year COOPFAM distributes 4t of the raw materials while União Plásticos develops the packages.

Under the deal, COOPFAM will use Braskem's renewable resin ‘almofadas’ in the initial stage in the production of traditional packaging.

Braskem Renewable Chemicals director Gustavo Sergi said: “Green Polyethylene meets the needs of companies for innovative and more sustainable solutions, such as COOPFAM and the Federal Government.

"This will be the first organic coffee packaging to invest in the use of green polyethylene in the Brazilian market."

“That is why the adoption of the biopolymer has grown worldwide and in products from different sectors. It is currently used in 150 brands in Europe, US, Asia, Africa, and South America.”

Braskem noted that Green Polyethylene is a significant contributor to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions which captures CO2 during its production process.

In addition, the 100% recyclable material does not require machinery adaptations.

The company’s Green Plastic plant has a production capacity of 200,000t annually.
