Austrian packaging firm Alpla has signed an agreement to acquire a 100% stake in African company Boxmore Packaging, which produces polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pre-forms, PET bottles and closures.

The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed by the companies.

Alpla CEO Günther Lehner said: “The African continent is an attractive growth market for us.

“With the purchase of Boxmore Packaging, we now also have a broad basis for entering the market in South Africa, in addition to our activities with Alpla Taba in North Africa.”

As part of the acquisition, all employees and locations of Boxmore will be transferred to Alpla but the management structure will remain the same.

Under the leadership of Boxmore CEO Len Engelbrecht, the current board will continue to manage the existing Boxmore business, which will operate under its existing name as a member of the Alpla Group.

"With the purchase of Boxmore Packaging, we now also have a broad basis for entering the market in South Africa, in addition to our activities with Alpla Taba in North Africa."

Established in 1995, Boxmore manufactures approximately four billion of PET products annually from its nine production facilities.

It primarily caters to the drinks industry, but also produces packaging for food, home, personal care and pharmaceutical products, and chemicals.

Len Engelbrecht said: “Our combined ambition to prioritise growth in Africa is a very exciting opportunity and one that we’ll be exploring through Boxmore’s current footprint, and existing relationships in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

The acquisition is subject to all necessary legal and regulatory approvals by the competition authorities.
