British supermarket chain Waitrose is set to launch new easily recyclable triangular sandwich wrappers, which are said to be the first of their kind in UK supermarkets.
The wrappers will enable the separation of cardboard and non-recyclable film in sandwich packaging.
Waitrose packaging manager Karen Graley said: “The change to our sandwich packaging may seem like a small one but it’s likely to make a big impact on the amount of packaging recycled.
“We continue to work on a solution to the pack’s plastic film in the hope that, in the future, none of the sandwich pack will go to landfill.”
Waitrose intends to implement its own-label packaging across all food categories that would be recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025.
The newly introduced sandwich packaging features cardboard that can be separated easily from its see-through film, which is expected to facilitate the recycling process.
