British packaging business DS Smith has unveiled two major technological developments at the #Deliver2 e-commerce event in Berlin, Germany.
The company introduced an e-commerce testing technology ‘DISCS’, and a right-size packaging solution Made2fit.
The newly introduced DISCS tests are effective in determining if the packages are durable and can sustain damage during e-commerce supply chain processes.
The solution is named based on five testing processes, namely Drop, Impact, Shock, Crush and Shake.
DS Smith e-commerce solution head Isabel Rocher said: “Finding the balance between protecting packaging and limiting the amount of materials used is a constant source of concern for retailers.
“Likewise, shoppers do not want to receive broken goods or have to deal with excess packaging. Our new DISCS technology enables us to scientifically assess our customers’ requirements and get this balance right.”

By GlobalDataCustomers can choose from three test levels based on the supply chain, with the final option including up to 50 touch points where packs tend to accrue the most severe damage.
DS Smith’s Made2fit helps to reduce storage space, lower costs and increases operational effectiveness.
Made2Fit comes in manual and automated versions where the former is designed to work for lower volume orders and can create 39 possible box size combinations from three blank sizes of cardboard.
The company claimed that the automated version is able to manage large orders that can manufacture 10 million box size combinations.
DS Smith launched DISCS and the automated version of Made2fit in Berlin, while the latter will be introduced to the rest of Europe from October until early 2018.
The manual version of Made2fit will be introduced in September this year, with an expected roll out across Europe in the following months.
