US-based Plastic Suppliers (PSI) has introduced a new ultra-thin, bio-based sealant film, EarthFirst UL, for use in flexible packaging applications.
Developed from lactic acid found in various renewable organic feedstocks including tapioca roots, sugar beets, sugar cane, and corn, EarthFirst UL is capable of reducing the cost of sealant films used in flexible packaging.
Belonging to PSI’s existing EarthFirst family of bio-based plastics, the new film also helps brand owners and flexible packaging converters to reduce freight costs and roll change-overs.
The film also takes up less storage space and reduces the material entering the solid waste stream.
Available in 36ml, 48ml, and 6ml gauges, EarthFirst UL is also suitable for various food packaging applications such as single-serve pillow pouches, coffee frac-packs, gusseted stand-up pouches, frozen foods and multi-wall bags.
EarthFirst UL can form better seals at lower seal initiation temperatures when compared to traditional linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE).

Plastic Suppliers president and CEO George Thomas said: “Our customers have been demanding innovation in packaging that does more with less.
“Our ability to provide an ultra-thin gauge, high-performance sealant film meets that need. The whole supply chain is more efficient, more cost-effective, and with a product that is sustainable and compostable.
“It is a win-win for the brand owners and flexible packaging converters. EarthFirst UL really is a game-changer.”
With manufacturing facilities in Columbus, Ohio, US, the company currently provides polylactic acid (PLA) based packaging films.
