US-based Sonoco has introduced a new clear barrier flexible packaging solution, ClearGuard.
Offering improved barrier properties for product protection, ClearGuard can be used in place of aluminium foil or metalized films.
Suitable for packing meat snacks, nuts, trail mixes, snack and nutrition bars, cookies and crackers, the solution also allows consumers to see the product inside its packaging.
ClearGuard can also be used for various other packaging applications, such as pet food offerings, including baked, dehydrated, freeze-dried and moist food and treats.
In addition, ClearGuard packaging offers improved printing and laminating options, including matte and glossy finish, to the brands.
It also offers improved flex crack resistance and durability, as well as speed to market via Sonoco's proprietary TEMPO, Accelerated Shelf Life Modeling solution.

By GlobalDataSonoco marketing and innovation vice-president Marcy Thompson said: “Shoppers want to see the product inside the package, so for products like trail mix, granola and jerky, the challenge is providing transparent packaging while still protecting freshness and quality.
“ClearGuard packaging has exceptionally low oxygen and water vapour transmission rates to protect the food inside and preserve its shelf life.”
In July 2016, a Sonoco joint venture packaging company, Cascades Sonoco, launched a new water-based barrier coating, FlexSHIELD, for use in folding carton applications.
FlexSHIELD has been designed to replace the standard polyethylene coating used on folding carton grades to create conventional food take-out containers.
