On 14 March, multinational packaging company DS Smith announced news of an investment in advanced, post-digital production technology at its UK facility.
The Nozomi C18000 Plus, which is set to be installed at its factory in Ely, Cambridgeshire, was purchased from digital printing technology specialists Electronics For Imaging (EFI) and prints directly onto board at fast speeds.
DS Smith says the award-winning printer advances its high-end 3D corrugated display capabilities in the UK and is designed to deliver superior quality and productivity.
“EFI Nozomi technology has played an important role in helping more CPG and FMCG brands stand out with timely, efficient and effective premium packaging,” said the managing director retail marketing at DS Smith UK Sarah Bell.
“Now that the printer is coming to our Ely corrugated display production facility, our customers will gain much more versatility, with the ability to quickly and affordably produce high-end, customised displays featuring targeted promotions or designs.”
The seven-colour printer has a configuration that gives DS Smith the ability to match 97% of Pantone Colours and also features inspection system technology that allows for rapid identification and correction of inkjet nozzle issues or other defects.

By GlobalDataEFI says the Nozomi C18000 Plus enables cost-effective, high-quality, direct-to-board digital printing and a number of steps associated with printing plates, printing, and lamination in traditional analogue production. The company also states that the advanced technology has a number of sustainable benefits and that the Nozomi inks meet OCC certification for recyclability and re-pulpability.
In addition, the printing technology specialists comment that single-pass, digital inkjet printing for corrugated packaging contributes to a real circular economy, thanks to a reduction of overproduction, waste and storage costs.
EFI vice-president and general manager of packaging and building materials Evandro Matteucci said: “High-speed, single-pass inkjet digital printing with EFI Nozomi technology helps industry leaders like DS Smith address brands’ evolving needs for lower waste, better efficiency, and more relevant, targeted content in high-graphics packaging and displays.
“This technology creates a new level of sustainability and capability for the corrugated space, and it will make DS Smith Retail Marketing even more responsive to brands looking to reduce the time needed to launch new display campaigns.”
DS Smith currently operates an EFI Nozomi C18000 Plus printer at its facility in Lisbon, Portugal, stating that the technology has significantly reduced delivery times for its customers. Digital printing technology is becoming ever more popular within the packaging industry and last month, Inside Packaging reported on how Interpack 2023 will be highlighting digital printing as a growing trend.
In addition, Packaging Gateway recently reported that digital can printing company NOMOQ opening a new production factory for beverage cans in the UK later this year.
