Specialty paper manufacturer Munksjö has introduced a new range of medical paper that can be used to produce pouches for sterilising medical devices.

When sealed, the medical pouches made from Munksjö’s new Steralia paper help identify the sterilisation method used during production.

Currently available in 60g/m and 70g/m variants, Steralia is made from virgin fibres and provides a fibre-free peel when opened.

Once sterilised, the pouches also help to maintain the sterility of packed contents, reducing the risk of infection and maximising safety for patients.

The new uncoated paper solution is said to form an efficient bacterial barrier during converting, sealing and sterilisation processes for medical devices.

Munksjö flexible packaging vice-president Alexandra Venot said: “Patients safety and risk of bacterial infection is of high concern globally. Medical pouches are consequently a growing market with an increasing demand for sterilisation solutions of medical devices.

Manufactured at Munksjö’s site in Rottersac, France, Steralia features improved strength and heat-sealing properties, which make the paper suitable for use in both paper-film or paper-paper medical pouches.

The company also noted that Steralia ensures easy processing with various sterilisation methods, such as steam, hot air, Eo-Gas, FORM-Gas and gamma irradiation.
