UK-based cosmetics company The Body Shop has expanded its sustainable refill programme to include a new makeup product, the Peptalk Lipstick.
Previously, the company was only offering refills on products across hair care, shower gels, and hand soap ranges. Customers can now get their lipsticks refilled at select stores.
The lipstick is packed in a refillable case that is made from 100% recycled aluminium.
The Body Shop launched a five-year program in 2021 to roll out refill stations in the majority of its stores. It is continuing the programme through new in-store stations and product offerings in the US and Canada.
The company introduced refill stations in 800 stores across the globe, including 91 in Canada. The refill stations have been implemented in 50% of the stores in the US.
The programme is also seeing strong response as 40% of the company’s customers in Canada opted for refill over standard packaging, helping the company to prevent more than 90,000 plastic bottles from going into circulation. Globally, the refill programme prevented more than half a million plastic bottles from entering the environment in 2022.

By GlobalDataThe Body Shop North America marketing and corporate social responsibility VP Hilary Lloyd said: “We want our customers to understand first and foremost that they can be changemakers—and that even small individual acts, like refilling your shampoo or shower gel in a reusable container, can have a big impact on our planet.
“The climate crisis is the greatest risk facing our future, which is why we call on beauty lovers everywhere to use their purchasing power to embrace a circular economy.”
The company is opening seven Changemakers Workshop concept stores across Canada in 2023. The concept stores will encourage customers to reduce plastic waste by supporting the refill program.
