Pasta manufacturer Garofalo’s new sustainable packaging is made from advanced recycling converted into biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) from Saudi chemical company SABIC.
This material is part of SABIC’s Trucircle programme, which works to give manufacturers access to sustainable materials to promote the circular economy.
The 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content of the bags derived from post-consumer used plastics. This material is turned into pyrolysis oil which is also used in the production of new polymers with the same specifications as virgin plastics from conventional feedstock.
Garofalo’s mono-PP pasta bags were also developed by the vertically integrated Portuguese manufacturer of flexible films for packaging products Polivouga and a specialist in the production of flexible polypropylene products for automated packaging in the food industry GT Polifilm.
The used mono-PP bags can reportedly be recycled in existing PP waste streams.
SABIC general manager Abdullah Al-Otaibi says: “For such solutions to work in the long-term, the partners in the material value chain must closely collaborate. With our Trucircle program, we are pushing for innovative business models to transform our industry from a linear to a circular one and help prevent the valuable material of end-of-life plastic applications from being wasted.”
