Finland-based alcohol distiller Northern Lights Spirits (NLS) has selected Thin Film Electronics’ (Thinfilm) near field communication (NFC) solution, SpeedTap, for use on its products.

Under the deal, Thinfilm’s electronically printed NFC SpeedTap tags will be featured on NLS’ gin and vodka bottles.

The tags are combined with cloud-based software that enables remote tag management, custom content delivery, and detailed analytics and reporting.

Each SpeedTap tag can be identified individually after being tapped by an NFC-enabled smartphone or device.

Once tapped, the tags wirelessly communicate with Thinfilm’s cloud-based software platform, creating a one-to-one mobile marketing platform from which brands can connect directly with consumers.

"Thinfilm’s NFC solutions now provide an effective means to do that, and we feel it will contribute significantly to consumer loyalty and the overall popularity of Kalevala Gin."

The tags also enable the companies to provide instant authentication messages, brand stories, promotional offers, product news, and other relevant content to customers.

Northern Lights Spirits managing director Moritz Wüstenberg said: “We’ve spent years creating what we believe to be one of the finest gins in the world, and sharing that unique Kalevala story with gin enthusiasts is very important to us.

“Thinfilm’s NFC solutions now provide an effective means to do that, and we feel it will contribute significantly to consumer loyalty and the overall popularity of Kalevala Gin.”

In December 2016, Thinfilm partnered with Prime Vision, the majority of which is owned by Dutch postal operator PostNL.

As part of the collaboration, Prime Vision will useThinfilm’s NFC tags, which includeSpeedTap and OpenSense, for major postal and logistics requirements.
