Austria-based plastic packaging company Alpla Group has entered a deal to purchase Romanian polyethylene terephthalate (PET) preform manufacturer, Star East Pet, for an undisclosed sum.

The deal, which is subject to necessary legal and regulatory approvals by the competent authorities, will enable Alpla to expand its production capacities in Eastern Europe.

Star East Pet's product portfolio and customer base will complement Alpla’s operations and provided enhanced proximity to its existing customers.

Established in 1997, Star East Pet produced PET preforms for drinks, food and non-food products for both local and international customers.

Alpla CEO Günther Lehner said: “We are gaining access to a strong distribution network. Star East Pet is a good strategic partner, which will help us to achieve our targets in Romania and beyond.”

The company mainly provides bottles and closures for the personal and home care markets, and has a PET recycling plant in southern Poland.

With around 75 employees, the plant recycles around 75,000t of PET bottles every year.

In March, Alpla Group announced that it had entered a partnership agreement with Egyptian plastic bottles and closures manufacturer Taba Group to form a joint venture (JV).

The majority share of the JV, named Alpla Taba, will be owned by Alpla.
