The business is bringing in more focused targets that will help in speeding up its sustainability progress.

By GlobalDataThe new targets have been created in partnership with independent experts and will prioritise circularity, expedite the journey towards net zero, as well as strengthen the company’s focus on people, communities, and nature.
The targets are also in line with Smith’s goal of ‘redefining packaging’ for the changing world.
The company is aiming to trial up to five reuse pilots by 2025 whilst continuing to produce 100% recyclable and reusable packaging in the meantime.
It will further focus on minimising its carbon footprint by reducing 46% of its scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, when compared with that of 2019/20.
The company intends to reach net-zero GHG emissions in its business by 2050.
Smith will also encourage all of its strategic suppliers to set science-based targets for their respective businesses, as well as to establish certain targets to regenerate nature through this science-based approach.
Smith’s CEO Miles Roberts said: “To address climate change, it is critical we adopt low-carbon, renewable, energy sources. But we must also address how we make and use things in our everyday lives, by moving to the circular economy.
“Through our Circular Design Principles, we already act as the gateway to the circular economy for our customers, helping some of the world’s most recognisable FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods] brands meet their sustainability goals, alongside our own.”
The company said it has already introduced various fibre-based alternatives in collaboration with its customers, to replace approximately 762 million plastics since 2020.
It has also created more than 30,000 circular-ready projects through its industry-leading Circular Design Metrics.
