Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs and Bosch Packaging Technology have developed a sealed paper packaging solution for dry foods.
The solution is designed to replace traditional dry foods containers with all-paper packaging produced on vertical form, fill and seal (VFFS) lines.
Brand owners will be able to reduce their environmental footprint with the new packaging, which is renewable, recyclable, biodegradable, dust-tight and insect-proof.
The solution will prevent food from being contaminated during transport and while on the shelf.
BillerudKorsnäs packaging paper SVP Johan Nellbeck said: "We are committed to challenging conventional packaging and this is a natural step – which will be followed by many more such steps.
"By working together with machine suppliers on a broad range of issues, we can explore and unlock the potential of our materials in order to find new solutions to meet packaging needs."

By GlobalDataThe new sealed packaging includes BillerudKorsnäs’s Axello ZAP paper, which was specifically developed for use with Bosch PME ZAP, the first VFFS solution with the ZAP-Module.
The sealed paper packaging can be used for several products, such as pasta, oats, flour, rice, muesli and sugar, as well as other non-food items that are currently packed in fossil-based packaging.
BillerudKorsnäs noted that a recent lifecycle assessment (LCA) study has revealed that Axello ZAP bag results in a 65% lower carbon footprint than a plastic bag.
