British supermarket chain Morrisons is launching an initial trial for a new in-store drop-off service for its customers to help recycle their used coffee machine pods.
The effort is being undertaken in partnership with pod recycling service Podback, which aims to make coffee pod recycling an easier and more convenient process for people.
The trial is initially being carried out across 29 Morrisons stores.
These stores with affiliated recycling points are located in Aldershot, Banbury, Basingstoke, Bedford, Bracknell, Carterton, Corby, Farnborough, Letchworth, Milton Keynes, Northampton – Kettering Road and Victoria Promenade, and Reading, among others.
As part of the initiative, Morrisons customers will be required to use Podback’s recycling bags to collect their used pods.
Once their bag is filled, participating consumers can visit their nearest Morrisons and drop it off at the store’s recycling point at the front of the supermarket.

By GlobalDataMorrisons said that its customers need to use the right colour-coded bags to engage in this scheme, one of which is dedicated to aluminium pods, and the other for plastic pods.
This will further help Podback to directly transfer separated pods to different British recycling processing facilities.
All of the used aluminium pods will be transformed into aluminium ingots that can be used for manufacturing new products such as beverage cans. Meanwhile, used plastic pods will be converted into other plastic items.
The remaining coffee grounds will be used for producing biogas or as soil improver after undergoing an anaerobic digestion process.
Morrisons’ sustainable packaging and plastics manager Natasha Cook said: “We are excited to be launching this trial with Podback as we look to make it even easier for our customers who want to brew fresh coffee at home to recycle their used coffee pods.”
Morrisons claimed that it is the first supermarket chain in the UK to launch recycling reward points specifically for coffee machine pods.
Podback and Morrisons first partnered in February 2022 to conceive the scheme.
The supermarket giant said that it will soon become a Podback member, which signifies that Morrisons could also recycle its own-brand pods along with 24 other pod brands under the same scheme.
