European Sack Group, a collaboration between CEPI Eurokraft and EUROSAC, has revealed industry guidelines that provide technical advice on how to achieve dust-free paper sacks.

CEPI Eurokraft is the European association for producers of kraft and sack kraft paper for the packaging industry.

EUROSAC represents more than 75% of European paper sack manufacturers.

The guidelines provide information for manufacturers of sacks for the building materials market.

The new documents have been released to mitigate poor filling and handling practices, as well as the use of inferior material and construction principles, which affect the cleanliness of paper sacks.

"When filling powdered material, it is of great importance to use a sack construction that is designed to prevent leakage of the product."

CEPI Eurokraft secretary general Elin Floresjö said: "When filling powdered material, it is of great importance to use a sack construction that is designed to prevent leakage of the product.

"With the Industry Guidelines, we aim to provide a service instrument for sack manufacturers and their clients and support them to reduce dust in the supply chain."

The industry guidelines provide insights into different sources of dust in paper sacks, including leakage from corners, valve openings, during filling or from perforations, as well as explain how they can be prevented.

The documents include illustrations, images and calculation methods that highlight best practices and serve as tools for practical application.

European Sack Group noted that dust-free paper sacks provide health and safety benefits, since workers and users are less exposed to hazardous material.

Clean sacks are easier to handle, and more stable on pallets and during loading. They also reduce product loss and damage to the environment.
