Novolex, a diverse packaging products manufacturer, has released its annual Sustainability Report, highlighting its progress towards achieving various environmental, social and governance goals last year.

The new report is the company’s fifth annual review on sustainability and has been written in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative.

It details Novolex’s various achievements, including its efforts to divert waste from landfills and an increase in its overall recycling capacity.

Novolex reported its ‘waste footprint’ for the first time by executing a waste-to-landfill measurement programme, which it began early in the year.

This initiative allowed the company to monitor and consequently minimise waste streams from operations. Since the waste programme’s launch, the company has diverted more than five million pounds of waste away from landfill.

It also started using more chain-of-custody-certified fibre and biobased resins for manufacturing its products.

This certification signifies that Novolex uses fibre from responsibly managed forests, further reassuring its customers.

The company said approximately 7% of the total virgin fibre volume it used was chain-of-custody certified in 2022, representing an increase of 1% over 2021.

It also reported that 49% of the raw materials it used in 2022 came from biobased, post-consumer recycled, and renewable sources.

Novolex chair and CEO Stan Bikulege said: “The 10,000 members of the Novolex family are working hard to develop more sustainable packaging solutions, expand recycling and reduce waste.

“To achieve our ambitions, we continue to look for innovative ways to promote our safety culture, develop talent and provide an inclusive workplace.”

Novolex has also recently announced its partnership with Nova Chemicals to operate its new recycling facility in Indiana, US.
