UK-based grocery and general merchandise retailer Tesco will be using TCL Packaging’s ovenable films for its food product range.
The new printed films feature micro perforations in order to support gas transmissions, making them ideal for Tesco’s bake-in-store, hot sandwiches and snacks as they allow steam to escape during cooking.
The apertures are, however, not too big and can thus protect hot contents and keep them fresh for longer, TCL Packaging said.
The films also come with an anti-mist coating, which minimises condensation from products having higher moisture content.
TCL Packaging managing director Mike Golding said: "What look like simple ovenable films have taken years to be perfected and rigorously tested for performance and food safety.
"It’s not just the behaviour of the inks and substrate material together at high temperatures that matters; the laser micro perforations and the anti-mist coating both had to be verified and approved.

By GlobalData"We believe we are the first manufacturer to have achieved full certification for this type of advanced ovenable film."
The design of the TCL product and its thorough testing, along with Smithers PIRA, led Tesco to select it for its ready-to-cook range.
TCL has also recently innovated micro-perforated printed lidding films for soft fruit packaging.
The films have been designed to allow particular gas and moisture transmission rates, effective tray sealing and maximum protection from contaminants for the contents.
These features make the TCL films a better option than conventional hole-punched lidding films for fruit.
