US-based packaging solution provider Avery Dennison has launched two bio-based polyethylene (PE) films for label applications at LabelExpo Europe this year.
The new products are in line with the company’s specified sustainability goals, which it intends to achieve by 2025.
These developments are claimed to be the first self-adhesive PE filmic labels manufactured with more than 80% renewable material.
Resin used for the products is derived from Bonsucro certified sugar cane, the company said.
The firm teamed up with resin producer Braskem and Belgium converter Desmedt Labels for testing the products at the Belgium facilities of Ecover, manufacturer of ecologically sound cleaning products.
Avery Dennison offers the products in two variants, white and clear, which can deliver functionality and performance similar to a regular polyethylene label.

By GlobalDataAvery Dennison materials group Europe sustainability director Xander van der Vlies said: "Economic growth, natural resource scarcity and an increasing demand for goods and services will all contribute to an uncertain supply of finite non-renewable resources in the years to come.
"With our expanding product range of sustainable label materials, which now includes these bio-based PE label films, we can support converters who want to fulfill brand owners’ needs for packaging from renewable resources, while also helping them to provide a differentiating product and drive sales in a fast-growing segment."
