Recycling and resources company Viridor has announced the opening of a £25m glass recycling facility in Newhouse, North Lanarkshire, UK.
The 70,000ft² facility, which is set to accept glass from 17 Scottish local authorities, features recycling technologies such as 15 ‘scientific eye’ optical and X-ray sorters.
More than 0.5km of conveyer belts and 2.5km of electrical cabling across three floors of processing towers will also be housed at the centre.
Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment Richard Lochhead said: "I welcome this significant investment in modern recycling infrastructure. Glass packaging is important to a number of Scottish food and drinks manufacturers and glass recycling makes sense for our economy and the environment."
The new centre is said to be part of a £357m recycling and renewable energy investment made by Viridor in Scotland.
The output glass produced by the centre is claimed to be 99% pure.
