Avalon Cabernet

US-based wine producer Avalon Winery has selected Nomacorc’s new zero-carbon-footprint plant-based wine cork ‘Select Bio’ for its California CAB brand.

The cork has been made with renewable plant-based biopolymers derived from sugar cane. It is completely recyclable and trichloroanisole (TCA)-free.

Avalon Winery produces wines that are part of the Purple Wine Company portfolio of brands.

Purple Wine Company marketing executive vice president Lisa Ehrlich said that the company works to cut down its carbon footprint in the winery, in the vineyard and in the community.

"Our next step was to implement sustainable solutions and practices into our packaging. Nomacorc’s Select Bio closure is a perfect choice for our California CAB as it combines quality performance and environmental benefits," Ehrlich added.

With the capability to control oxygen transmission through the cork, the Select Series helps to prevent oxygen-related wine faults, such as oxidation and reduction.

Nomacorc principal scientist Dr Olav Aagaard said that the company has focused on creating better wine closures that protect wine and improve overall quality.

"Select Bio is a true reflection of our drive for innovation, and we are excited to offer wineries a closure that is both reliable and sustainable," Aagaard added.

Bottling with Select Bio is expected to begin in July. By the end of the year, all Avalon CAB wines will contain Nomacorc’s Select Bio plant-based closure.
