Europe’s packaging industry saw a drop of 12.5% in overall deal activity during Q3 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 28 deals worth $2.13bn were announced for the region during Q3 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 32 deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in Q3 2020 with 20, representing a 71.4% share for the region.

In second place was private equity with six deals, followed by venture financing deals with two transactions, respectively capturing a 21.4% and 7.1% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in Europe’s packaging industry with $2.11bn, while venture financing deals totalled $20.04m.

The top five packaging deals accounted for 99.1% of the overall value during Q3 2020.

The combined value of the top five packaging deals stood at $2.11bn, against the overall value of $2.13bn recorded for the quarter.

The top five packaging industry deals of Q3 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Covestro’s $1.87bn asset transaction with Royal DSM

2) The $137.7m acquisition of Gallus by Benpac

3) Sonoco Products’ $49.11m acquisition of Can Packaging

4) The $36m acquisition of Graphic West International by CCL Industries

5) Planet First Partners’ venture financing of Polymateria for $18.85m.
