North America’s packaging industry saw a drop of 29% in overall deal activity during Q3 2019, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 27 deals worth $513m were announced for the region during Q3 2019, against the last four-quarter average of 38 deals.
Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in Q3 2019 with 15, representing a 55.6% share for the region.
In second place was private equity with nine deals, followed by venture financing deals with three transactions, respectively capturing a 33.3% and 11.1% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

The top three packaging deals accounted for 97.4% of the overall value during Q3 2019.
The combined value of the top three packaging deals stood at $500m, against the overall value of $513m recorded for the quarter.
The top three packaging industry deals of Q3 2019 tracked by GlobalData were:
1) Cascades’ $207m asset transaction with Orchids Paper Products
2) The $175m asset transaction with Rayonier Advanced Materials by Sappi
3) Coppermine Capital, Stairway Capital Management Co and WindSail Capital Group’s $118m private equity deal with Genera Energy
