Berry Plastics to introduce new recyclable drinks packaging technology

Plastic consumer packaging and engineered materials provider Berry Plastics Group is launching new 100% recyclable thermal management packaging technology, for use in the drinks packaging market.

The new #5 plastic polypropylene-based Versalite technology will be introduced by the company in the form of hot and cold to-go cups.

The Versalite to-go cup is recyclable and durable, and helps consumers to keep their drink hot or cold for longer periods.

Greiner to remove BPA from food packaging

Greiner Packaging International has decided to cease use of the controversial chemical compound Bisphenol A (BPA) in the production of its food packaging.

The company will convert all production lines to BPA-free raw materials by the end of March 2014.

The crystal-clear, heat-resistant, dishwasher-proof material has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food and Safety Association (EFSA).

Avery Dennison expands European PET recycling programme

Avery Dennison has announced the addition of two new collection facilities in a bid to expand its PET recycling programme in Europe.

The company’s recycling partner Morssinkhof Rymoplast will receive waste PET liners directly, either at its main plant Zeewolde or at collection facilities in Lichtenvoorde, the Netherlands and at Przeczno, in Poland.

With the two new facilities in place, more brand owners across Europe can benefit directly from the Avery Dennison recycling programme.

Pratt Industries to construct $260m recycled paper mill in Indiana

Corrugated packaging company Pratt Industries is ready to construct a $260m 100% recycled paper mill, its fourth in Valpariaso, Indiana.

To be built adjacent to the company’s existing box-making plant, the new mill is expected to bring the company’s overall containerboard capacity to 1.5 million tonnes.

The mill occupies a new 250,000ft² building on the 50-acre site owned by the company. Upon reaching full capacity, the facility is expected to produce 360,000t of recycled paper annually.

UK Can Makers introduces online 3D packaging design app

The UK Can Makers has introduced CanCreator, the first free online 3D packaging design app for drinks cans.

The new CanCreator makes it easy for designers and brand owners to visualise and share creations in 3D in various sizes and finishes.

Templates for various can sizes are available to download for use in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, enabling designers to focus on their creations.

PCA to buy Boise for $1.9bn

Containerboard and corrugated packaging manufacturer Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) has signed an agreement to acquire Boise for $1.9bn, which includes $714m of outstanding indebtedness.

As a result of the acquisition, PCA’s corrugated products volume will increase by around 30% and its market presence will expand into the Pacific Northwest.

Acquiring the corrugated shipping boxes producer will additionally allow PCA to increase its containerboard capacity by 42% to 3.7 million tonnes. It also announced the expansion of paper machine number two (D2) at Boise’s DeRidder mill.

Parle Agro to package drinks in Tetra Pak paper-based cartons

Indian soft drinks firm Parle Agro has partnered with Swedish food processing and packaging solutions provider Tetra Pak to develop 250ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Edge bottle packs, for its Frooti and Appy beverages.

Parle Agro uses six-layer tamper-evident Tetra Pak packaging for its drinks in order to keep them sealed from oxygen, light and bacteria. Fitted with a fully resealable screwcap, the paper-based bottle packs can be recycled into several products, including stationary and furniture.

Parle Agro had adopted the Tetra Classic Aseptic carton for its Frooti beverages in 2004. It will initially launch its Frooti and Appy soft drinks in new packs in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir states.

The UK’s first dedicated beverage carton recycling facility to open

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) UK and paper and packaging producer Sonoco Alcore have opened a facility capable of recycling up to 40% of the cartons manufactured by the UK food and drinks industry each year.

The virgin wood fibres found in cartons will be converted into industrial-strength recyclable coreboard and used to wrap paper, man-made fibre yarns and metal and plastic film for industrial applications.

The facility will be able to produce sufficient material for 15,500t of new coreboard annually.

Recycling collections of beverage cartons in the UK are expected to increase, as the facility offers a domestic recycling location to local authorities.
