Dutch multinational paints, coatings and speciality chemicals firm AkzoNobel has announced the opening of a new €1.8m production facility in Thane, India, to produce functional and barrier coatings for the flexible packaging industry.
Dubbed Project Taj, the facility, located 25km northeast of Mumbai city, will also manufacture coatings for the metal packaging industry. It will primarily serve Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, and Southeast Asian markets.
With an annual capacity of 5,000t, Project Taj will produce a range of products including interior lacquers for food and beer cans. It will also manufacture internal and external lacquers for caps and closures, and water-borne external lacquers for drink cans.
AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings managing director AB Ghosh said that the company is expanding its production capacity on a priority basis as its South Asian markets are growing, particularly India.
"It reflects our optimism about the market and commitment to invest in the markets where we are active," Ghosh added.
Said to have been modeled after the infrastructure of the packaging coatings plant in Vilafranca, the new facility will operate in full compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and security (HSE&S) standards of the company.
