ALPLA Group, a plastic packaging company, has announced a strategic partnership with Re-Purpose to boost its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic recycling in Africa.
ALPLA is investing €60m ($65.25m) to develop its first PET recycling facility in Africa.
The 90,000m² recycling plant is located in Ballito, in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The facility, expected to commence operations in early 2025, will produce more than 35,000 tonnes (t) of recycled PET annually.
This collaboration merges ALPLA’s recycling proficiency with Re-Purpose’s innovative reverse logistics, focusing on developing solutions that promote the circular economy and job creation in KwaZulu-Natal and potentially across South Africa.
Re-Purpose will enhance its baling centres and establish new ones to facilitate PET bottle collection, assisting ALPLA in creating a strategic supplier base for PET bottle bales.
