Austria-based packaging and recycling company ALPLA and mineral water company Vöslauer have partnered to develop a reusable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle.
The bottle is manufactured using fully recyclable PET mono-material containing around 30% recycled material, which will be scaled up in the future.
In 2019, independent consultancy firm c7-consult revealed that reusable PET causes 70% of the carbon emissions of reusable glass, making it the most environmentally friendly packaging solution.
By introducing reusable PET packaging, Vöslauer will be able to remove around 420t of carbon emissions a year.
The new reusable PET bottle is also around 90% lighter compared to glass alternatives, which has helped lower carbon footprint by nearly 30%.
ALPLA Central and Eastern Europe regional manager Rainer Widmar said: “There is currently not a single reusable PET product in the Austrian market, even though it’s the best solution in this respect.

By GlobalData“ALPLA continuously optimises the use of resources on the basis of research and development. We are looking very closely at material reduction, alternative materials and caps.
“Our aim is to be introducing only fully recyclable packaging to the market by 2025. The proportion of processed post-consumer recycled materials is to increase to 25% of total material usage.
“To achieve this, ALPLA is investing €50m a year and continuously developing new and sustainable packaging solutions. Vöslauer’s reusable PET bottle is a prime example of this.”
The reusable PET bottle is scheduled to hit retail shelves early next year.
Vöslauer and ALPLA started their sustainability partnership in 2018 when they introduced a fully recycled PET (rPET) bottle.
Last October, ALPLA introduced the world’s first carbon-neutral rPET, produced by using green electricity and offsetting unavoidable emissions with carbon certificates.
To produce the resin, the company’s PET Recycling Team plants in Wöllersdorf, Austria, and Radomsko, Poland, moved to a combination of electricity from renewable sources.
