RE-ZIP, a Danish software company and circular packaging solutions supplier, has initiated a reusable packaging trial with Amazon in five European countries.

The trial involves a newly designed cardboard box that customers can fold and return via a convenient collection point after scanning a QR code.

RE-ZIP CEO and founder Bo Bach Boddum said: “We have rolled out the project in several countries, but the collaboration with Amazon is the biggest single test we’ve ever conducted. That’s why we’re very excited to see how Amazon’s customers will receive our patented cardboard boxes.”

The boxes are designed to be reused multiple times, potentially reducing the need for new packaging.

RE-ZIP and other start-ups that are part of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator will collaborate with Amazon’s packaging experts during the trial.

The pilot aims to gather insights on reducing packaging consumption.

RE-ZIP is one of the two companies selected by Amazon last month to supports its packaging reduction efforts.

RE-ZIP and Hipli, the other company, will ship nearly 100,000 orders using reusable packaging across France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria.

Hipli plans to fulfil 50,000 orders from Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Montélimar with its reusable packaging in September.

Amazon sustainability director Justine Mahler said: “Amazon Sustainability Accelerator is a testament to Amazon’s commitment to supporting innovation and driving positive change.

“By providing a real-world testing ground for unique and cutting-edge technologies, we’re not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating a blueprint for more sustainable practices across industry.”

Amazon has supported more than 40 start-ups in the UK and Europe through its Sustainability Accelerator programme.

Since launching in 2022, the programme has provided more than €1m ($1.09m) in grants and credits.

Last month, Amazon introduced a new packaging solution in the UK, designed to minimise waste and improve sustainability.
